Stellar Blade, developed by Shift Up and marking their first non-gacha release in the US, has garnered significant attention. It's celebrated for its challenging soulslike gameplay, stunning visuals, an electrifying soundtrack, and its provocative character design.
In our review, IGN's Mitchell Saltzman noted that "Stellar Blade stands out as a gorgeous and well-crafted action game with very impressive strengths and very clear weaknesses." He highlighted that while the story and characters could be deeper, and some RPG elements like sidequests felt lackluster, the game's combat system, inspired by Sekiro, is rock solid. The game features a variety of monstrous enemies and plenty of hidden treasures that encourage exploration. IGN officially gave Stellar Blade a 7/10, though personally, I found it to be even more enjoyable and would have scored it higher. It didn't make it onto our list of the best PS5 games of 2024 due to its recent release (games need to be out for at least 6 months to qualify).
For optimal performance, I recommend playing Stellar Blade in "Performance" mode on your PS5 to maintain a smooth 60fps. If you're lucky enough to own a PlayStation 5 Pro, you can enjoy the game in "Enhanced" 4K mode with framerates above 50fps. The official PlayStation blog states that with PS5 Pro, "players will be able to enjoy Stellar Blade in 4K resolution at 50fps or more, with smoother gameplay, and you’ll notice an improvement in grain and detail in the game in PSSR upscale mode. Plus, the HFR (high framerate) option is supported, allowing you to enjoy a fluid gaming experience at 80fps (120hz display support required)."
