Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster’s Development Exceeded Original Timelines
Staying True to the Original Games Was a Priority

The five-year development cycle for Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster reflects the team's commitment to delivering a premium-quality remaster that respects the originals. In a March 4, 2025 interview with Dengeki Online, the developers detailed their approach to upgrading the classic titles.
Initially announced in 2022 with a planned 2023 release, the project encountered delays and is now launching this year. Takahiro Sakiyama, Game Director and IP lead for the Gensou Suikoden series, shared that during final debugging, the team identified the need for additional refinements, which led to postponing the original launch schedule.
Game Director Tatsuya Ogushi elaborated, "We began by carefully evaluating the situation. After consulting with Sakiyama and reviewing our quality standards, it became evident that several aspects needed attention, and we were determined to address them thoroughly."
Laying the Foundation for a Series Revival

The remaster represents more than a standalone project—it marks the initial phase in reviving the Suikoden franchise. Series Producer Rui Naito outlined the long-term vision for the IP and hinted at future developments.
Naito emphasized to the production team, "This project is the critical first step in bringing Suikoden back, so we couldn't afford any missteps. Our directive was to create a solid foundation." He continued, "For the HD Remaster, I instructed Sakiyama and the team to deliver a thoroughly polished product, because if we release anything less than excellent at this pivotal moment, it could jeopardize the entire revival effort."
Gensou Suikoden Live Unveiled New Anime, Mobile Game, and Additional Content

The Gensou Suikoden Live event on March 4, 2025 showcased Konami's expanded plans for the franchise. Naito described the event as the second phase in the IP's revival, though the full roadmap remains in development.
He explained, "This is why we've been meticulously refining the HD Remaster while preparing for the upcoming mobile title Suikoden STAR LEAP and the Suikoden II anime adaptation. Once we successfully deliver these projects, we can then consider our next steps."
Konami announced Suikoden: The Anime, a series adapting the narrative of Suikoden II, produced by the newly established Konami Animation. Additionally, the mobile game "Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP" was introduced. While teaser trailers for both projects have been released, specific launch dates remain unconfirmed.
Konami continues to develop additional projects and events to support the Suikoden franchise's return to prominence.
Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune & Dunan Unification Wars is scheduled to launch on March 6, 2025 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. For the latest updates on Suikoden I & II HD Remaster, explore our additional coverage below!
