Hello discerning readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for August 28th, 2024. Yesterday's presentation was packed with exciting announcements, wasn't it? A flurry of surprise game releases means our typically quiet Wednesday is anything but, and that's a welcome change. We've got news, a review of today's eShop additions, and the usual rundown of new and expiring sales. Let's dive in!
News
The Partner/Indie World Showcase Delivered Abundant Choices
Combining two smaller showcases was a smart move, resulting in a wave of announcements. While a complete list is beyond this scope, highlights include several surprise releases (detailed below), Capcom Fighting Collection 2, the Suikoden I & II remasters, Yakuza Kiwami, Tetris Forever, MySims, Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition, new installments in the Atelier and Rune Factory franchises, and much more. I highly recommend watching the video; even a quick scan will reveal many appealing titles for diverse tastes.
Notable New Releases
Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
A third Castlevania compilation emerged as a pleasant surprise during the Direct. This collection features the three Nintendo DS titles: Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia. It also includes the infamous arcade game, Haunted Castle, alongside an M2-developed remake that significantly improves upon the original. As expected from M2, this is a high-quality release boasting excellent emulation and a wealth of desirable features. An incredible value for the price.
Pizza Tower ($19.99)
This Wario Land-inspired, fast-paced platformer makes its Switch debut as another surprise release. Players navigate five massive floors of the Pizza Tower to destroy it and save their restaurant. Fans of Wario's handheld adventures will find this a must-have, but even those without strong Wario feelings who enjoy platformers should give it a try. A review is pending.
Goat Simulator 3 ($29.99)
The surprise releases continue. Let's be honest, without them, Wednesdays would be rather dull. Goat Simulator 3 is exactly what you'd expect. While I can't comment on its Switch performance, I know more powerful consoles have experienced occasional struggles. Proceed with caution. However, even poor performance might enhance the game's inherent absurdity. Ultimately, it's your call. Silly goats, silly antics in an open world—your Switch might or might not erupt in digital fury.
Peglin ($19.99)
While I understand the temptation to criticize missed opportunities, I genuinely believe EA made a colossal mistake by not bringing Popcap's games to the Switch. A collection would have been ideal. Alas, it didn't happen. For Peggle enthusiasts, Peglin is a superb alternative. Already available on mobile, it translates flawlessly to Switch. It's essentially Peggle infused with turn-based RPG roguelite elements. A review will follow shortly.
Doraemon Dorayaki Shop Story ($20.00)
Kairosoft's approach to revitalizing its simulation game formula? A licensed property. Doraemon Dorayaki Shop Story is a typical Kairosoft shop sim featuring characters from the popular Doraemon manga and anime. The license is well-integrated, with even some cameo appearances from the creator's other works. Charming.
Pico Park 2 ($8.99)
More Pico Park for existing fans. Up to eight players can participate via local or online multiplayer. The more, the merrier applies here perfectly. Solve puzzle stages that demand cleverness and teamwork. A great choice for those who want more of the first game, but not significantly different enough to attract newcomers.
Kamitsubaki City Ensemble ($3.99)
An affordable rhythm game showcasing Kamitsubaki Studio's music. Hit the notes, follow the narrative, enjoy the tunes. Not the most extravagant, but adequately priced.
SokoPenguin ($4.99)
A Sokoban-style crate-pushing puzzler starring a penguin. One hundred levels. You know if this is for you.
Q2 Humanity ($6.80)
More quirky physics-based puzzles, this time over three hundred. Utilize your character's abilities and drawing mechanics to solve problems. Up to four players can join in locally or online.
