Virtua Fighter Returns: A Glimpse into the Future
Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades. Developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza series and the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster, this new installment promises a fresh take on the classic fighting game.
The recently released footage, shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, isn't actual gameplay, but rather a meticulously choreographed cinematic showcasing the game's visual style. While undeniably staged, the in-engine graphics offer a compelling preview of the final product. The visuals represent a departure from the franchise's signature polygonal aesthetic, leaning towards a more realistic style reminiscent of both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured, sporting new outfits that deviate from his traditional look.
The last major Virtua Fighter release was Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, a 2021 remaster coming to Steam in January 2025. This new entry, however, promises a completely original experience. Details remain scarce, but Sega's commitment to revitalizing the Virtua Fighter brand is evident through these ongoing reveals. As Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi declared in the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The game's development is also being overseen alongside Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's other major project, Project Century. This renewed focus, coupled with the recent success of other major fighting game franchises, suggests the 2020s could be a golden age for the fighting game genre.
