Blizzard Welcomes Marvel Rivals, Acknowledges Striking Similarity to Overwatch 2

Author : Amelia May 12,2025

From the moment Marvel Rivals was revealed, it drew inevitable comparisons to Overwatch. At a glance, Marvel Rivals mirrors Blizzard's game closely; while it utilizes Marvel's iconic heroes and villains, it shares Overwatch's essence as a competitive multiplayer hero shooter, complete with strikingly similar mechanics and gameplay systems. Both Marvel Rivals and Overwatch 2 are free-to-play, supported by live service monetization, and rely on the regular introduction of new characters to keep the gameplay fresh and engaging.

Since its explosive launch in December, Marvel Rivals has seen a surge in popularity, reportedly at the expense of Overwatch 2's player base. The narrative suggests that Blizzard's game is losing ground as NetEase's Marvel Rivals captures the attention of millions of players.

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller addressed the new competitive landscape Blizzard is navigating, with Marvel Rivals now a formidable presence. "We're obviously in a new competitive landscape that I think, for Overwatch, we've never really been in before, to this extent where there's another game that's so similar to the one that we've created," Keller remarked.

One might assume this situation would be detrimental to Overwatch, but Keller described it as "exciting" and praised Marvel Rivals for taking Overwatch's established ideas in a "different direction." He acknowledged that the success of Marvel Rivals has prompted a shift in Blizzard's approach to Overwatch 2, stating, "this is no longer about playing it safe."

In response, Blizzard has unveiled ambitious plans for Overwatch 2 in 2025, promising not just new content but a fundamental transformation in core gameplay. This includes the introduction of hero perks and the controversial return of loot boxes.

The gaming community is keenly watching to see if these changes can reignite interest in Overwatch 2. Since its debut in 2016, and the subsequent launch of Overwatch 2 two-and-a-half years ago, Blizzard has kept player numbers under wraps. However, Steam's concurrent player data shows Overwatch 2 at its lowest since its 2023 launch on the platform, with a peak of 37,046 players over the last 24 hours. In contrast, Marvel Rivals remains a top 10 most-played game on Steam, boasting a peak of 310,287 players in the same timeframe.

Overwatch 2 continues to face challenges, maintaining a 'mostly negative' user review rating on Steam. Its reputation took a hit in August 2023, when it became the worst user-reviewed game on Steam due to backlash over its monetization model. Blizzard faced criticism for updating the premium Overwatch into a free-to-play sequel, Overwatch 2, rendering the original game unplayable in 2022. Subsequent issues, including the cancellation of the long-awaited PvE Hero mode, further tarnished its image.
