Put an End to the Paintress's Madness This April 2025
Set in a fantasy world inspired by "Belle Epoque France," Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on April 24, 2025. Sandfall Interactive announced this eagerly awaited date during Xbox's Developer Direct, emphasizing the game's fresh take on turn-based combat. The game will be available on day one with Xbox Game Pass, offering players immediate access to this innovative experience.
Players can pre-order the base game for $44.99 or opt for the Deluxe Edition at $59.99 on the Xbox Store. For those on Steam and PS5, both editions are available at a 10% discount, priced at $44.99 and $53.99 respectively. While the game is currently only wishlistable on the Epic Games Store, Steam's discount will end on May 2, 2025, and PlayStation's discount will be available until the game’s release at 3:00 PM (local time). PS5 players should note that a PlayStation Plus subscription is required to enjoy this introductory price.
New Characters of Expedition 33: Monoco and Esquie
Sandfall Interactive has introduced two new characters joining the 33rd expedition: Monoco and Esquie. Monoco, a "friendly and bloodthirsty Gestral," brings a unique twist to combat with his ability to transform into defeated enemies, leveraging their powers to enhance the team's strategy. Fascinated by future battles, Monoco's immunity to the Paintress' power adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.
Esquie, on the other hand, is a living legend and the oldest and strongest being in the world. Although he takes a backseat in combat, Esquie's role is pivotal in exploration, enabling the team to access various locations across the open-world map. By collecting his special stones, players can unlock new abilities and explore previously unreachable areas.
The full cast of characters was previously revealed on October 16, 2024, in a YouTube video, including Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso. Despite their diverse backgrounds and motivations, these characters unite to break the cycle of death.
Turn-Based Combat Innovation and Deep Character Customization
Sandfall Interactive is set to revitalize the classic turn-based RPG combat in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. According to an article from Xbox Wire on January 23, 2025, the game introduces a reactive turn-based system that blends real-time elements, allowing players to dodge attacks or parry for significant damage. CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche emphasized the game's depth, stating, "We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face... every character has their own playstyle and you can really play them in a lot of different ways."
The combat system includes customizable difficulty settings to accommodate different player skills, from those with "Sekiro-caliber timing" to those who need more time to react. This system not only challenges players' strategic thinking but also their reflexes.
Beyond combat, the game offers extensive character customization. Each character possesses unique mechanics and skill trees, such as Lune's ability to accumulate "Stain" to boost her abilities. Players can evolve "Pictos" into "Luminas" after four battles, turning these modifiers into permanent passive effects that further enhance character builds.
With such deep customization options, players can explore hundreds of different builds, tailoring their playstyle to their preferences through Luminas, unique skills, and abilities. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 promises a fresh and engaging experience that combines strategic depth with the thrill of real-time combat elements.
