Development Started After X-Men 2: Wolverine's Revenge
Kevin Edwards, once a key figure at Genepool Software, recently unveiled a treasure trove of images on Twitter (X) from a canceled Iron Man game intended for release in 2003. Dubbed "The Invincible Iron Man," the game was meant to pay homage to the iconic comic book character. Edwards worked on this ambitious project soon after the successful launch of X-Men 2: Wolverine's Revenge.
Edwards shared the game's title card, featuring Genepool Software's logo, alongside several gameplay screenshots. He followed up with a post containing actual gameplay footage from the original Xbox console he used during his tenure at Genepool Software. This footage showcased the game's startup screen and a snippet of the tutorial set in a rugged desert environment.
"The Invincible Iron Man" Was Canned by Activision
Despite the enthusiasm from Edwards and the fanbase's positive reaction to the shared content, "The Invincible Iron Man" was abruptly canceled by Activision just months into development. The closure of Genepool Software followed shortly thereafter, leaving Edwards and his team without jobs.
Activision never officially disclosed the reasons for canceling the game, but Edwards provided some insights based on speculation. In response to queries, Edwards stated, "We never got to hear the exact reason(s) why they canned it. The film being delayed was a big one, or perhaps they didn't think the game was good enough and therefore didn't want to fund it further. Or perhaps some other dev was lined up to get it instead."
Commenters also noted the unique design of Tony Stark's character in the game, which predated Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by nearly five years. The suit design in "The Invincible Iron Man" closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version from the early 2000s. Edwards admitted he was unsure about the design choice, saying, "No idea I'm afraid. That was the [designer's] choice."
While Edwards promised to share more gameplay footage, at the time of writing, no further updates have been posted. This glimpse into a forgotten project serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of game development and the lost potential of "The Invincible Iron Man."
