Fallout developers, including New Vegas director Josh Sawyer, have expressed enthusiasm for a new Fallout game, but their participation hinges on creative freedom.
Fallout Devs Open to a New Entry, But Innovation is Key
The Need for Novelty
Josh Sawyer, in a YouTube Q&A, stated his willingness to helm another Fallout title, emphasizing the crucial role of creative leeway. He highlighted the importance of understanding project scope and limitations: "Any project hinges on 'what are we doing, what are the boundaries, what am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?'" He further elaborated, "If those constraints are overly restrictive, it loses its appeal. Why work on something that prevents exploration of desired concepts?"
This sentiment is echoed by other Fallout developers. Last year, co-creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky expressed interest in a Fallout: New Vegas remaster. In an interview with The Gamer, Cain clarified that his involvement depends on the project offering innovative elements. He explained, "Every RPG I've made offered something new...It was the game itself that offered me something interesting." He emphasized the need for novelty, stating, "If someone said, 'You want to make a Fallout game?' My answer is 'Well, what's new?'"
Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart also expressed a desire to work on another Fallout game, given the opportunity. However, in a January 2023 Game Pressure interview, he confirmed that no such project was underway, citing Obsidian's commitments to Avowed, Grounded, and Outer Worlds 2. He stated, "We’re not working on Fallout, and we haven’t even talked about what it would be." He added his hope to contribute to another Fallout game before retirement, but acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding timing and project feasibility.
