The Shape-Shifting Villain Makes His DCU Debut
DC Studios co-leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran have officially confirmed details about the upcoming Clayface film, verifying its place within DC Universe continuity and its planned R-rating.
The metamorphic villain, originally Basil Karlo in DC Comics lore, possesses the terrifying ability to reshape his malleable clay physiology into any form. First appearing in 1940's Detective Comics #40, Clayface ranks among Batman's most enduring adversaries.
DC Studios recently announced a September 11, 2026 release date for the project, greenlit following the critical success of HBO's The Penguin series. Horror maestro Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) penned the screenplay, with Lynn Harris and The Batman director Matt Reeves attached as producers.
Why Clayface Belongs in the DCU
During a DC Studios presentation attended by IGN, Gunn and Safran clarified Clayface's positioning within their shared universe rather than Reeves' more grounded The Batman continuity.
"Clayface is absolutely DCU canon," Gunn stated emphatically. Safran added, "Matt Reeves' crime saga encompasses strictly his Batman trilogy and Penguin series. Those exist in their own narrative space while remaining under the DC Studios umbrella."
"We maintain fantastic collaboration with Matt," Safran continued, "but Clayface demanded inclusion in our broader DC Universe. This presents an opportunity to explore the cinematic origin of a quintessential Batman rogue."
Gunn emphasized the character's incompatibility with Reeves' realistic take: "A shape-shifting metahuman simply wouldn't fit the rules of Matt's meticulously grounded crime world."
Production Details Revealed
Safran disclosed that Speak No Evil director James Watkins currently negotiates to helm the project, with principal photography slated to begin this summer.
"We're preparing to roll cameras on what promises to be a remarkable body horror film that reimagines this classic villain's genesis," Safran revealed. "Mike Flanagan delivered an extraordinary screenplay that compelled us to accelerate this project."
"Though perhaps less recognized than Batman's A-list foes, Clayface's story carries equal - if not greater - psychological terror," Safran asserted. Gunn enthusiastically described the vision as "uncompromising horror - genuine, visceral, and disturbing."
The duo confirmed Clayface will carry an R-rating, with Gunn noting: "Five years ago when we were producing films like The Belko Experiment, we'd have killed for a horror script this strong. That it exists within the DCU makes it even more exciting."
