The Mario Kart World Map: A New Vision, Not Canon
A Seamless World Built for Racing

Mario Kart World presents an original map that brings together iconic locations from the Mario universe. However, Producer Kosuke Yabuki clarified that this is not the official, canon version of the beloved Mushroom Kingdom.
In a June 3 interview with The Verge, Yabuki explained that the interconnected world was specifically crafted with racing gameplay as the priority. He stated, "As you journey through this world, you'll recognize elements reminiscent of the Mushroom Kingdom, like question mark blocks and warp pipes. But in terms of its overall design, this world was built for Mario Kart World. The scale of a mountain or the expanse of a desert were all decisions made specifically for this game."

Yabuki emphasized that the team wasn't focused on replicating real-world geography for towns or islands. Instead, they dedicated themselves to creating a world that maximizes the fun of racing. He also noted that any single change created a ripple effect, requiring the team to reevaluate everything from multiple angles due to the world's interconnected nature.
"This makes terrain design a particularly challenging task," he elaborated. "Altering one element necessitates adjustments to many others." This philosophy led to fundamental rethinking of several components, especially with the increase from 12 to 24 racers, forcing the team to reconsider core elements to accommodate the new scale.
Day-One Update Now Live

Prior to launch, Nintendo released the patch notes for Mario Kart World's first update. Version 1.1.0 activates CameraPlay, a new Switch 2 feature that lets players broadcast a live feed of themselves into the game. This requires the separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory.
Additionally, the update enables online and LAN multiplayer, as well as the ability to upload and download ghost data in Time Trials. It also increases the number of characters available from the start and removes the course selection time limit for Wireless Play and LAN Play sessions.
