BG3's Patch 7 Brings In Over A Million Mods Shortly After Rollout

Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 7 has arrived, and the player response has been phenomenal, especially regarding the sheer volume of mods.

BG3 Modding Is "Pretty Big," Says CEO Swen Vincke

Mod.io Founder Reports Over 3 Million Mod Installs

Following the September 5th release of Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7, the modding community exploded. Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, tweeted that over one million mods were installed within 24 hours: "Modding is pretty big - we had more than a million mods installed in less than 24 hours." This was further amplified by Scott Reismanis, founder of ModDB and mod.io, who reported the number surpassing three million installs and continuing to climb: "Just ticked over 3m installs and accelerating."

Patch 7 introduced significant new content, including evil endings, improved split-screen, and the much-requested built-in Mod Manager. This tool allows players to seamlessly browse, install, and manage mods without leaving the game.

The existing modding tools, accessible via a separate Steam app, empower modders to create custom stories using Larian's Osiris scripting language. Modders can also load custom scripts, debug, and publish directly from the toolkit.

Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon for BG3

PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" (by modder Siegfre on Nexus), which unlocks a level editor and reactivates previously disabled features in Larian's editor. Larian had previously been cautious about providing full access to its development tools, with Vincke stating, "We are a game development company, we're not a tools company." While acknowledging player creative freedom, he clarified that not all development tools would be fully supported.

Vincke confirmed Larian's commitment to cross-platform modding, acknowledging the complexity: "It is not the easiest thing in the world because we have to make it work on consoles and on PC." The plan is to begin with PC support, followed by consoles after addressing potential issues and navigating submission processes.

Beyond modding, Patch 7 delivers numerous improvements: refined UI, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and extensive bug fixes and performance optimizations. With further updates planned, we anticipate more news on Larian's cross-platform modding progress.
