Horizon Could Be PlayStation’s Big Movie Win if It Stays Faithful to the Games

Author : Eleanor Feb 20,2025

Following the successful cinematic adaptation of Uncharted in 2022 and the critically acclaimed HBO series based on The Last of Us, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie was inevitable. PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures have officially announced a film adaptation, promising a faithful recreation of Aloy's origin story and the game's breathtaking, machine-populated world. While still in early development, the film has the potential to be Sony's first major video game box office triumph—provided it stays true to the source material.

Recent years have witnessed a surge in successful video game adaptations across various platforms. The Super Mario Bros. and Sonic movies, targeting family audiences, set a high bar for both critical acclaim and box office revenue. On television, Sony's The Last of Us, alongside Netflix's Arcane and Amazon Prime's Fallout, are fan favorites. Even adaptations with mixed reviews have achieved significant box office success, such as the Tom Holland-led Uncharted film, which grossed over $400 million.

Despite the decline of the "video game curse," challenges remain. Uncharted, while popular, deviated significantly from the games. Conversely, last year's Borderlands film and Amazon's Like a Dragon: Yakuza adaptation underperformed critically and commercially, largely due to their disregard for the source material's storylines, lore, and tone. These failures highlight a broader issue with adaptations: a tendency to stray too far from the original work. Netflix's The Witcher, for example, significantly altered the books' events, characters, and overall tone. While adaptations require adjustments, these examples demonstrate how excessive changes can alienate fans and jeopardize the project's success.

Horizon's unique robotic ecosystems would be incredible to witness on the big screen.
This brings us back to Horizon. While a Netflix series was previously planned, it's now been scrapped in favor of a theatrical release. This is a strategic move, considering the extensive CGI required to bring Horizon's visuals to life. The larger budget of a Hollywood film is crucial for realizing the story's full potential on the big screen.

If the Horizon film emulates the success of The Last of Us, it could be PlayStation's first cinematic blockbuster. The success of Fallout, Arcane, and The Last of Us demonstrates that faithfulness to the source material—including visuals, tone, and narrative—is vital. While The Last of Us introduced new storylines, it maintained the core narrative structure, resonating with both fans and newcomers. A similar approach for Horizon would likely yield similar results.

Faithfulness to the original game isn't solely about fan expectations. Horizon Zero Dawn's compelling narrative earned it prestigious awards, including Best Narrative at The Game Awards 2017 and Outstanding Achievement in Story at the 2018 DICE Awards. The story, set in 31st-century North America, follows Aloy's journey to uncover her origins and their connection to Elisabet Sobeck, her doppelganger. Aloy, along with her allies Erend and Varl, and the enigmatic Sylens, are captivating characters within a rich, complex world. The game explores themes of environmental disaster and rogue AI, adding depth and intrigue.

The unique cultures of Horizon's world could prove as compelling as Avatar's Na'vi tribes.
The intricate worldbuilding, featuring diverse tribes and settlements, offers ample material for a compelling film franchise. Similar to Avatar's exploration of Na'vi culture, a Horizon film could delve into the Nora tribe's survival strategies against robotic hunters. The unique combat encounters, featuring creatures like Sawtooths, Tallnecks, and Stormbirds, promise visually stunning action sequences.

Horizon's compelling story, unique world, and cinematic aesthetic make it ripe for adaptation. The expansive narrative of Forbidden West further enhances the franchise's potential. By faithfully adapting the game's strengths, Sony can create a successful film franchise that matches the success of its source material. This approach could also pave the way for successful adaptations of other PlayStation titles, such as Ghost of Tsushima and Helldivers 2. However, deviating from what made Horizon great could result in negative fan reception and financial setbacks. Sony must prioritize staying true to the game's essence to ensure the film's success.
