Sega's Risk-Taking Approach Fuels RGG Studio's Ambitious Projects
RGG Studio, the creative force behind the Like a Dragon series, is simultaneously developing multiple large-scale projects, a feat attributed to Sega's willingness to embrace risk and innovation. This bold strategy is evident in the studio's upcoming slate, which includes two entirely new ventures.
Sega Embraces Risk for New IPs and Concepts
RGG Studio's current development pipeline is remarkably ambitious. Alongside the next Like a Dragon installment and a Virtua Fighter remake slated for 2025, the studio is also developing two additional titles, one of which is a brand-new IP. Studio head and director Masayoshi Yokoyama credits Sega's proactive approach to risk-taking for this opportunity.
In a surprising move, RGG unveiled trailers for two separate projects within the same week in early December. Project Century, a new IP set in 1915 Japan, was revealed at The Game Awards 2025, followed by a trailer for a new Virtua Fighter project (distinct from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. remaster) on Sega's official channel. The scale and ambition of both projects underscore the studio's confidence and Sega's unwavering support.
"Sega accepts the possibility of failure; it doesn't solely pursue safe bets," Yokoyama explained to Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media. He further suggests this risk-tolerant philosophy is ingrained in Sega's DNA, citing the creation of Shenmue as an example. Born from a desire to explore new avenues, the idea of transforming Virtua Fighter into an RPG led to the birth of this action-adventure series.
RGG Studio assures fans that the simultaneous development of these projects won't compromise quality, particularly concerning the Virtua Fighter franchise. Series creator Yu Suzuki has expressed his support for the new project, and Yokoyama, along with Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada, emphasizes their commitment to delivering a high-quality product.
Yamada adds, "With the new 'VF,' we aim to create something innovative and exciting for a broad audience. Whether you're a fan or not, we hope you'll anticipate further updates." Yokoyama echoes this sentiment, expressing his eagerness for gamers to experience both titles.
