A Deep Dive into The Blood of Dawnwalker's Gameplay
Over 21 Minutes of New Gameplay Revealed
Developer Rebel Wolves unveiled over 21 minutes of new gameplay footage for The Blood of Dawnwalker in a recent showcase. This extensive overview spotlights the diverse mechanics and systems players will encounter in this upcoming vampire-themed dark fantasy RPG.
Rebel Wolves clarified that the footage represents "actual gameplay from a work-in-progress pre-beta version," noting the game is still in development and subject to change. The demonstration was captured on a PC.
Design Director Daniel Sadowski introduced this story-driven, open-world RPG set in a medieval Europe-inspired realm. The showcase focuses on gameplay systems, following protagonist Coen on a mid-game quest to locate a powerful weapon hidden within an ancient cathedral's crypts.
Mastering the Blade: Combat Designed for Swordsmanship

Sadowski emphasized the team's core combat goal: to make players feel like genuine swordmasters. The demonstration begins with Coen confronting roadside bandits, using the encounter to explain basic combat mechanics and character abilities.
"We aimed for players to feel like observant swordmasters, carefully studying their foes," Sadowski stated. Attack direction is crucial, influencing the effectiveness of both player and enemy strikes. Successful attacks, blocks, and parries build Activation Charges, a resource used to unleash powerful skills.
Coen can cast these skills at the cost of his health, with the game briefly pausing to allow players to select an ability. Examples shown include Burning Blood (damage over time), Acrid Dust (a short stun), and the lethal Artery Attack, which can instantly decapitate an enemy.
Player Agency and a Dual-Form Gameplay Loop

Sadowski reiterated the game's focus on narrative freedom, allowing players to tackle its open world and quests as they choose. "Each quest is a complex structure with multiple paths to the objective," he explained. "We maximize player agency, offering a narrative sandbox."
This freedom is enhanced by a dual-form gameplay loop. In his human form during the day, Coen has limitations. Specific, hidden areas can only be accessed after he transforms into a vampire at night. This adds a strategic layer, as certain tasks are only possible in one form—entering buildings discreetly as a human, or using enhanced mobility to traverse rooftops as a vampire.
As a vampire, Coen gains new traversal and combat abilities. His health becomes a Hunger meter; letting it deplete to zero causes him to lose control. Players manage this by choosing how to feed, from knocking humans unconscious with minimal blood loss, to fully draining them, or feeding on animals instead.
Time as a Strategic Resource, Not a Relentless Clock

The game features a 30-day structure for completing the main goal: defeating the antagonist, Brencis, and saving Coen's family. However, Sadowski described time more as a strategic resource than a strict countdown.
Players can rush to confront bosses immediately or spend time leveling up and improving gear. They can also abandon a current objective to find alternate routes to ultimately reach Brencis, emphasizing player choice.

The overview concluded with a boss fight against Xanthe the Dark Mistress, one of Brencis's lieutenants. Bosses feature varied attacks and unique styles, and players can optionally investigate them before battle to understand their motivations, potentially opening avenues for dialogue.
Sadowski highlighted the seamless blend of main and side quests: "They are different stories you weave into your own unique adventure." The Blood of Dawnwalker is scheduled for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For the latest updates, explore our related coverage below.
