Bungie's Marathon: A Developer Update After a Year of Silence
After a year of radio silence, Bungie’s Game Director, Joe Ziegler, finally provided an update on their upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon. Initially unveiled at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game generated significant excitement but lacked subsequent details.
Ziegler confirmed the game is progressing well, undergoing substantial revisions based on extensive player testing. He described Marathon as Bungie's take on the extraction shooter genre, hinting at a class-based system featuring customizable "Runners" with unique abilities. Two Runners, "Thief" and "Stealth," were showcased via screenshots, their names hinting at their gameplay styles.
While a release date remains distant, expanded playtests are planned for 2025, offering more players opportunities to participate in development. Ziegler encouraged fans to wishlist the game on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation to demonstrate interest and facilitate communication.
A Reimagining of a Classic
Marathon is a reimagining of Bungie’s 1990s trilogy, marking their first significant departure from the Destiny franchise in over a decade. While not a direct sequel, it's set in the same universe and retains a distinctly Bungie feel, accessible to both newcomers and longtime fans. The game, set on Tau Ceti IV, casts players as Runners competing for alien artifacts and valuable loot, either solo or in teams of three. High-stakes encounters with rival crews and perilous extractions are key elements.
Initially conceived as a purely PvP experience without a single-player campaign, Ziegler suggests potential additions to modernize the game and introduce a new narrative arc.
Platform and Features
Marathon is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with confirmed cross-play and cross-save functionality.
Challenges and Changes
The development journey has faced setbacks. In March 2024, the original project lead, Chris Barrett, was reportedly dismissed following allegations of misconduct. Joe Ziegler subsequently took over, potentially influencing development direction. Furthermore, Bungie experienced significant layoffs, impacting development timelines.
Despite these challenges, the planned 2025 playtests offer a glimmer of hope, suggesting progress continues toward the game's eventual release.
