EA's Next Battlefield Game: A Return to Form
Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that the next installment in the Battlefield franchise is slated for release sometime between April 2025 and March 2026, falling within their fiscal year 2026. This announcement came alongside the unveiling of Battlefield Labs, a new player-testing initiative designed to gather feedback during the game's development.
This initiative, coupled with the introduction of Battlefield Studios—an umbrella encompassing DICE, Motive, Ripple Effect, and Criterion—highlights EA's significant investment in the project. The four studios are collaborating on various aspects of the game:
- DICE (Stockholm): Multiplayer development.
- Motive: Single-player missions and multiplayer maps.
- Ripple Effect: Attracting new players to the franchise.
- Criterion: Single-player campaign.
EA emphasized the "critical" development phase and the importance of player feedback in refining core gameplay elements, including combat, destruction, weapons, vehicles, gadgets, maps, modes, and squad play. Classic modes like Conquest and Breakthrough will be tested, alongside explorations of new ideas and improvements to the class system.
This new Battlefield marks a return to a modern setting, a departure from the futuristic and historical settings of recent titles. This decision, influenced by the feedback received on Battlefield 2042, aims to recapture the essence of the Battlefield 3 and 4 era, focusing on a refined core experience and a 64-player map size. The controversial Specialist system from Battlefield 2042 will also be absent.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson described the project as one of EA's most ambitious, reflecting the substantial resources and collaborative effort involved. The focus is on regaining the trust of long-time fans while simultaneously expanding the Battlefield universe to attract a broader audience. While specific platforms and the official title remain unannounced, the return to a modern setting and the emphasis on player feedback suggest a strong commitment to delivering a successful and well-received entry in the Battlefield series.
