Ex-Bethesda Dev Predicts Fallout 3 Remaster Will Enhance 'Not Good' Gun Combat

Author : Oliver Apr 25,2025

With the successful release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, fans are eagerly anticipating which Bethesda game will be next in line for a remaster. Speculation is rife that Fallout 3, which was leaked back in 2023, could be the next candidate. Bruce Nesmith, a designer on the original Fallout 3, has highlighted areas where Bethesda could enhance the 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG, particularly in terms of gun combat, which he described as "not good" in the original game.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that a remastered Fallout 3 would feature shooting mechanics more akin to those in Fallout 4. He noted, "What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3." He praised the significant improvements made to gun combat in Fallout 4, acknowledging that Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first attempt at a shooter-style game.

Oblivion Remastered, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, showcases a plethora of enhancements. It boasts 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, but the improvements extend far beyond visuals. The leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus have all been refined. Additionally, new dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have been introduced. These changes have been well-received by fans, with some suggesting that Oblivion Remastered is more akin to a remake. Bethesda has clarified their decision to opt for a remaster rather than a full remake.

Nesmith believes that a remastered Fallout 3 would likely follow a similar path of improvements as seen in Oblivion Remastered. He pointed out that the combat in the original Fallout 3 did not compare well to other shooters of its time, stating, "Also, it’s an RPG shooter, it’s not a run-and-gun shooter. But a lot of work was done on that for Fallout 4. So I anticipate seeing a lot of that work go into it, assuming they’re doing the same thing."

He further emphasized the extent of the upgrades in Oblivion Remastered, saying, "Oblivion wasn’t just brought up to the 2011 version of Skyrim. It was brought up to something that, at least on the surface, looks like it exceeds the most recent graphics update in Skyrim." Nesmith went as far as to call The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered "Oblivion 2.0," highlighting its impressive overhaul.

Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, ongoing work on Fallout 76, and the Fallout TV show, which is set to explore New Vegas in its second season. This busy schedule promises a wealth of content for fans in the coming years.
