Microsoft is taking another step in integrating artificial intelligence into everyday experiences by introducing its AI Copilot into the Xbox ecosystem. This new feature, known as Copilot for Gaming, aims to enhance your gaming experience by offering advice, helping you track your progress, and performing various tasks to streamline your gameplay. The rollout will begin with Xbox Insiders through the Xbox mobile app, allowing early testing and feedback.
Copilot, which replaced Cortana in 2023 and is already a part of the Windows operating system, will bring several features to Xbox at launch. You'll be able to use it to install games on your Xbox directly from the app—a task that's currently a single-button process. Additionally, Copilot can help you recall your play history, check your achievements, browse your game library, or even suggest what to play next based on your preferences. During gameplay, you can interact with Copilot via the Xbox app, receiving answers in a manner similar to how it functions on Windows.

One of the most significant features highlighted by Microsoft is Copilot's role as a gaming assistant. You can already ask Copilot for help with game-related queries on PC, such as strategies to defeat a boss or solve a puzzle, and it will pull information from various online sources like guides, wikis, and forums. Soon, this functionality will extend to the Xbox app, allowing you to seek assistance directly from your console.
Microsoft is committed to ensuring the accuracy of the information provided by Copilot. They are collaborating with game studios to ensure that the AI reflects the intended game knowledge and directs players to the original sources of information.
Looking ahead, Microsoft has ambitious plans for Copilot in gaming. In a press briefing, spokespeople discussed potential future uses, such as serving as a walkthrough assistant to explain game mechanics, helping players remember where they left items in a game, or suggesting where to find new ones. In competitive games, Copilot could offer real-time strategy tips and explain gameplay dynamics. While these are currently just concepts, Microsoft is keen on deeply integrating Copilot into the Xbox gaming experience. They also confirmed plans to work with both first-party and third-party studios to enhance game integration.

Regarding user privacy and control, Microsoft has stated that during the mobile preview, Xbox Insiders can opt out of using Copilot and decide how it interacts with their data. However, the possibility of making Copilot a mandatory feature in the future was not ruled out. A spokesperson emphasized transparency about data collection and usage, ensuring players have choices regarding their personal data.
Beyond player-focused applications, Microsoft is also exploring how Copilot can benefit game developers. They will provide more details on this at the upcoming Game Developers Conference.
