The 2025 State of the Game Industry Report
80 Percent of Game Devs Are Making Games for PC
The Game Developers Conference (GDC) has unveiled a striking trend in its 2025 State of the Game Industry report, released on January 21, 2025. This annual survey, which captures the pulse of the global gaming community, indicates that a whopping 80% of game developers are now focusing on PC game development. This marks a significant jump from last year's figure of 66%.
The report speculates that this surge could be linked to the growing influence of Valve's Steam Deck. Although not listed as a primary platform, a notable 44% of developers who selected 'Other' mentioned the Steam Deck as a target platform, highlighting its rising importance in the PC gaming ecosystem.
PC gaming has long been the dominant force in the industry, with its share increasing steadily from 56% in 2020 to the current 80%. Despite the emergence of user-generated content platforms like Roblox and Minecraft, and the much-anticipated Switch 2, PC's stronghold continues to grow. However, the upcoming Switch 2, with its enhanced graphics and performance, might slightly alter this trajectory.
One-Third of Triple A Devs Works On Live Service Games
The report also sheds light on the trend towards live-service games, with 33% of AAA developers currently engaged in developing such titles. When considering all respondents, 16% are actively working on live-service games, and 13% express interest in doing so. In contrast, a significant 41% of developers show no interest in this genre.
Developers drawn to live-service games appreciate the financial and community-building advantages they offer. However, those uninterested cite concerns such as declining player interest, creative stagnation, and issues with microtransactions and potential burnout. GDC points out that market oversaturation is a major hurdle, with maintaining a sustainable player base proving challenging. Ubisoft's recent decision to shut down XDefiant, just six months post-launch, underscores this challenge.
Some Devs Underrepresented in GDC’s State of the Game Industry
An article from PC Gamer on January 23, 2025, highlighted a notable gap in the GDC report's respondent demographics. Nearly 70% of the surveyed developers hail from Western countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Notably absent are significant contributions from China, a powerhouse in mobile gaming, and Japan, known for its unique gaming culture.
This skew towards Western perspectives may influence the report's findings, potentially not fully representing the global state of the game industry. As the gaming world becomes increasingly interconnected, understanding these diverse viewpoints will be crucial for a comprehensive view of the industry's trends and challenges.
