Assassin's Creed Shadows: Revamped Parkour and Dual Protagonists
Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan-set adventure, is set to launch February 14th, bringing significant changes to the franchise's iconic parkour system and introducing a unique dual protagonist structure.
The game features Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at navigating environments unseen, and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat. This design caters to both stealth aficionados and fans of the more recent RPG-focused entries like Odyssey and Valhalla.
Ubisoft has detailed significant parkour system overhauls. Instead of free-climbing any surface, players will now utilize designated "parkour highways." While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable areas remain accessible, requiring a more strategic approach. These designated paths are designed for optimal flow and player experience.
Enhanced Parkour Mechanics:
A key improvement is the seamless ledge dismount system. Players can smoothly disengage from ledges, executing stylish flips and maneuvers during descents. The addition of a prone position further enhances movement options, enabling diving while sprinting, alongside sliding. As Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois explains, this focused approach to parkour design enhances level design control, differentiating Naoe's abilities from Yasuke's.
“[The change] afforded us more control about where Naoe can go, and where Yasuke can't...Rest assured that most of what you'll see in Assassin's Creed Shadows is still very much climbable - especially with the grappling hook - but players will have to look for valid entry points from time to time.”
Assassin's Creed Shadows releases on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th. Its launch coincides with other highly anticipated titles, making its success in a competitive February release window an intriguing prospect.
