Marathon Set for September 23 Launch
Revisiting Tau Ceti

Bungie, known for Destiny and Halo, hosted a gameplay showcase on April 13 for its first-person extraction shooter, Marathon. The game pits six teams of three players against each other and AI enemies, competing to secure and extract valuable loot.
This marks a significant shift from the original Marathon trilogy. Launched in 1994, followed by Marathon 2: Durandal in 1995 and Marathon Infinity in 1996, the series focused on single-player, story-driven experiences.

In a PlayStation.blog post on April 12, Bungie shared insights into Marathon’s direction. Despite its multiplayer focus, Narrative Lead Jonathan Goff emphasized preserving the immersive storytelling that defines Bungie’s legacy.
Goff noted, "The original trilogy wove intricate narratives, events, and characters to create a world of discovery and intrigue." He added, "Our aim with Marathon is to craft worlds where dynamic stories emerge naturally."
Crafting a "Story Engine" in Marathon

The gameplay reveal highlighted a focus on in-game economy, with items carrying clear sell values and defined extraction mechanics. However, Bungie stressed that wealth isn’t the sole objective.
The developers envision Marathon as a "story engine," fostering memorable moments and epic battles, even in defeat. Game Director Joe Ziegler, in a recent PC Gamer interview, outlined the game’s vision.
He explained, "We want players to embark on adventures and feel the thrill of survival challenges. Some of my best gaming moments come from failures or unexpected twists." Ziegler emphasized that success isn’t just about survival but about the stories players create.
Collaborating with Fans and Creators

Bungie has actively involved fans and content creators in Marathon’s development. From early prototypes to pre-production, players provided critical feedback that shaped the game.
Initial concerns about unfair map designs, such as spawn camping or loot scarcity, prompted changes. Ziegler shared, "We redesigned the game to ensure each match starts fresh, allowing teams to strategize and compete for loot on equal footing."
Marathon Closed Alpha Playtest Details

Bungie will host a closed alpha playtest for Marathon from April 23 to May 4, limited to U.S. and Canada residents.
The alpha includes four playable Runners: Blackbird, akin to Destiny 2’s Warlock; Void, with tactical invisibility; Locus, featuring a tactical shield; and Glitch, boasting high mobility. Players can explore three maps, including Perimeter, a woodland map for five crews (15 players), and Dire Marsh, an open map for six crews (18 players).

To join, visit Marathon’s official Discord server, navigate to the alpha-access channel, enter the "/alpha" command, and await Bungie’s invitation. As a closed alpha, participation isn’t guaranteed, marking the game’s first public test.
No further playtests have been announced for other regions. Marathon launches on September 23, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay updated with the latest game details in our article below!
