Sony Cancels Nine Games Amid Fan Fury

Sony now finds itself in a challenging situation after its ambitious goal to introduce 12 live service games by 2025 was derailed. The company recently cancelled nine of those projects, a decision that has frustrated its player community.

In 2022, Jim Ryan, then President of Sony Interactive Entertainment, unveiled the plan to launch 12 live service titles by 2025. This strategic shift was meant to adapt to evolving trends in the gaming industry. However, many fans expressed concern, worried that Sony was sidelining its acclaimed single-player narratives. While the company promised to continue supporting solo experiences, the outcome has been different than many hoped.

It has now been confirmed that 9 of the 12 planned titles have been scrapped. Beyond the breakout success of Helldivers 2, which captivated millions, the company has shuttered both Concord and Payback. Other major cancellations include The Last of Us: Factions, Insomniac's Spider-Man: The Great Web, and a God of War game that was in development at Bluepoint Games.

Nearly all of the canceled games were part of Sony's significant push into the live service market. Critics within the gaming community argue the company became overly focused on this trend, potentially neglecting its core strengths. As a result, new projects from studios like Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games are now likely several years away.
