'I Know It's Not What Everybody Else Is Doing' — Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Will Keep on Putting PlayStation and Nintendo Logos in Microsoft Showcases

Microsoft has recently begun to include logos for rival platforms, such as the PlayStation 5, during its Xbox showcases. This shift reflects the company's broader strategy to release its games across multiple platforms, a trend that has become evident over the past few months. For instance, during the Xbox Developer Direct, games like Ninja Gaiden 4, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 were showcased with logos for Xbox Series X and S, PC, Game Pass, and notably, the PlayStation 5.

This approach marks a significant departure from Microsoft's earlier showcases. In June 2024, Doom: The Dark Ages was initially announced without the PS5 logo during the Xbox event, though later trailers did include it. Similarly, games like BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the Diablo 4 expansion Vessel of Hatred, and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows were announced for Xbox Series X and S and PC, without mention of the PS5.

In contrast, Sony and Nintendo maintain a more traditional stance. Sony's recent State of Play showcase focused exclusively on PlayStation, with no mention of Xbox, even for multiplatform titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, which ended with only the PS5 logo and release date. Similarly, Sega's Shinobi: Art of Vengeance and other titles like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Onimusha: Way of the Sword were presented solely as coming to PlayStation, despite their availability on other platforms.

Microsoft's gaming boss, Phil Spencer, addressed this change in strategy during an interview with XboxEra. When asked about the inclusion of PlayStation logos in Xbox showcases, Spencer emphasized transparency and the desire to inform players about where they can access Microsoft's games. He noted that last year's June showcase faced logistical challenges in updating all assets, leading to some inconsistencies.

Spencer stressed the importance of focusing on the games themselves, stating that Microsoft's strategy allows for the development of significant titles while supporting its native platform. He acknowledged the differences between open and closed platforms but reiterated his belief that expanding game accessibility is crucial for the industry's growth. Spencer's background in game development underscores his commitment to ensuring that games remain at the forefront of Microsoft's efforts.

Looking ahead, it's likely that future Xbox showcases, such as the anticipated June 2025 event, will continue to feature logos for the PS5 and possibly the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Games like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and the latest Call of Duty may be showcased with these logos alongside Xbox. However, don't expect Sony or Nintendo to adopt a similar approach in their showcases.
