Capcom is diligently working to enhance the performance of Monster Hunter Wilds ahead of its much-anticipated release, aiming to make the game more accessible to a broader audience by potentially reducing the PC's GPU requirements. Here's a detailed look at Capcom's strategy for optimizing this thrilling game.

Plans to Lower GPU Requirements for PC

As reported on the game's German Twitter (X) account on January 19, 2025, Capcom is actively improving Monster Hunter Wilds' performance. A video shared by Monster Hunter Germany demonstrated smoother gameplay, featuring a hunter engaging with Quematrice, a rooster-like brute wyvern. This footage highlighted the updated Prioritize Framerate mode for PS5, which enhances fps while making some graphical sacrifices.

The same post confirmed that similar performance enhancements are in the works for the PC version, with a specific focus on lowering the recommended GPU requirements. "Performance will be improved in a similar way, and we are looking into whether we can lower the recommended GPU requirements," the post stated.

Currently, the game's minimum GPU requirements are set at NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super and AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT. If Capcom successfully implements their plan, Monster Hunter Wilds could be playable on lower or mid-tier GPUs, significantly expanding its potential player base.

To further assist players, Capcom is also planning to release a free benchmarking tool. This tool will help users determine the optimal settings for their systems or check if their PC can run the game without the need for an upgrade, provided the GPU requirements are lowered.

Issues in the First Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta

The first open beta of Monster Hunter Wilds, conducted between October and November 2024, left many players concerned due to significant performance issues. Feedback from Steam users highlighted the presence of low-poly NPCs and monsters, which some felt resembled the graphics of a PS1 game.

In addition to the unsettling visuals, players experienced fps drops and other performance hiccups. Even those with powerful PCs found that improving performance often came at the expense of graphical quality, further diminishing the game's visual appeal.

Capcom acknowledged these issues on November 1, 2024, assuring players that the problem of afterimage noise in certain environments, when Frame Generation is enabled, would be resolved in the full game. They also noted that the game's performance had already improved beyond what was seen during the beta.

Gamers will soon have another chance to experience these improvements as Capcom has announced a second Open Beta Test for Monster Hunter Wilds, scheduled for February 7-10 and 14-17, 2025. This test will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam, and will feature the Bird Wyvern Gypceros along with an unknown monster. It remains to be seen whether the recent performance updates will be incorporated into this final beta test.
