Monster Hunter Wilds PC Technical Issues: A Disaster

Capcom's latest release has made a significant impact on Steam, securing the 6th spot among the most-played titles. However, the game has faced substantial criticism from the community due to its technical shortcomings. Digital Foundry's comprehensive analysis of the PC version further validates these concerns, highlighting numerous issues that detract from the gaming experience.

One of the most glaring problems is the lengthy shader pre-compilation process, which can take up to 9 minutes on a high-end 9800X3D processor and over 30 minutes on a Ryzen 3600. Additionally, the texture quality remains substandard even when set to "High." On a system equipped with an RTX 4060 at 1440p resolution with "High" settings and balanced DLSS, users experience significant frame time spikes. Even the more powerful RTX 4070 with 12 GB of memory struggles, with textures appearing notably poor.

For users with GPUs boasting 8 GB of memory, Digital Foundry recommends reducing texture quality to "Medium" to alleviate stuttering and frame time issues. However, this compromise does not fully resolve the problem, as visual quality remains unsatisfactory. Rapid camera movements exacerbate the issue, causing noticeable spikes, though slower movements mitigate this to some extent. Even with lower texture settings, frame time problems persist.

Alex Battaglia from Digital Foundry points to data streaming as a primary culprit, putting excessive strain on the GPU during decompression. This issue is especially severe for budget graphics cards, resulting in sharp frame time spikes. Battaglia advises against purchasing the game for those with 8 GB GPUs and expresses reservations about its performance even on more powerful setups like the RTX 4070.

The game's performance on Intel GPUs is particularly dismal. The Arc 770, for instance, only manages 15–20 frames per second, accompanied by missing textures and other visual artifacts. While high-performance systems can partially mitigate these issues, the game still fails to run smoothly across the board. Currently, finding optimized settings that maintain visual quality is nearly impossible, often resulting in significant compromises.

In conclusion, despite its popularity on Steam, Capcom's new release is marred by severe technical issues that significantly impact the player experience. Digital Foundry's analysis underscores the need for substantial improvements to meet the expectations of PC gamers.
