Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation
Director Andy Muschietti, known for his work on It and The Flash, recently provided an update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. While the project, initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009 with game director Fumito Ueda involved, has faced delays, Muschietti confirmed it's far from abandoned.
The director cited factors beyond creative control as contributing to the extended development time, specifically mentioning ongoing discussions regarding the film's budget and the considerable popularity of the source material. He confirmed the existence of a preferred script among several versions.
This update follows Sony's recent announcement of several other video game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.
Muschietti, while admitting he's not a hardcore gamer, called Shadow of the Colossus a "masterpiece" and stated he's played it multiple times. He acknowledged the game's lasting impact, noting its influence on titles like Capcom's 2024 Dragon's Dogma 2. The film aims to capture the game's unique atmosphere and iconic colossi, ensuring its legacy extends beyond the gaming world. Ueda, the creator of the original game and founder of GenDesign, recently unveiled a new sci-fi title at The Game Awards 2024, further solidifying the enduring appeal of his distinctive style. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, the Shadow of the Colossus live-action adaptation promises to introduce this classic to a wider audience while captivating existing fans.
