Metal Gear Pioneered a Storytelling Concept in Stealth Games

Hideo Kojima Reflects on Metal Gear's 37th Anniversary: The Radio Transceiver's Revolutionary Storytelling

July 13th marked the 37th anniversary of Konami's groundbreaking stealth-action title, Metal Gear. Creator Hideo Kojima used this occasion to reflect on the game's enduring legacy and innovative design choices. In a series of insightful tweets, Kojima highlighted the in-game radio transceiver as Metal Gear's most significant contribution to video game storytelling.

While the game's stealth mechanics are widely lauded, Kojima emphasized the radio transceiver's unique role in shaping the narrative. This feature, utilized by protagonist Solid Snake, provided players with crucial information, including boss identities, character betrayals, and team member deaths. Kojima explained its function extended beyond mere exposition, stating it "can also help motivate players and explain the gameplay and rules."

Kojima's tweet emphasized the transceiver's real-time interaction with the player's actions: "The game moves along with the player, so when the drama happens when the player isn't present...the player's feelings get detached. But with the transceiver, the player's current situation can be depicted while the other characters' story or situation can be foreshadowed in parallel." He expressed pride in this "gimmick's" lasting influence, noting its continued use in modern shooter games.

At 60, Kojima also addressed the impact of age on his creative process. He acknowledged physical limitations but highlighted the value of accumulated knowledge, experience, and wisdom in anticipating societal and project trends. He believes this leads to increased "accuracy of creation" throughout the entire development lifecycle, from planning to release.

Kojima's reputation as a cinematic auteur within the gaming industry is well-deserved. Beyond cameo appearances with actors like Timothée Chalamet and Hunter Schafer, he remains deeply involved with Kojima Productions, collaborating with Jordan Peele on the project "OD." Furthermore, a live-action adaptation of Death Stranding, produced by A24, is in the works.

Looking ahead, Kojima remains optimistic about the future of game development. He believes that technological advancements will empower developers to achieve feats unimaginable three decades ago. He concluded, "By borrowing the help of technology, 'creation' has become easier and more convenient. As long as I do not lose my passion for 'creation,' I believe I can keep going."
