Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a hallmark of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is purely practical. The anticipated shorter play sessions (approximately 40 minutes each) in Nightreign's multiplayer-focused design leave insufficient time for players to engage with the asynchronous messaging system.
The asynchronous messaging system, a beloved feature allowing players to leave messages for one another, has been a key element in fostering community engagement in previous FromSoftware titles. However, Ishizaki explained to IGN Japan that this system would clash with Nightreign's faster-paced, more intense gameplay loop.
Preserving Asynchronous Elements
While the messaging system is absent, FromSoftware intends to retain and enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic will return, improved to allow players to not only observe how others perished but also loot their spectral remains. This aligns with FromSoftware's goal of creating a "compressed RPG" experience, prioritizing intensity and variety over extended playtime.
A Compressed RPG Experience
The decision to omit the messaging system reflects FromSoftware's broader vision for Nightreign: a more focused, consistently intense, and multiplayer-centric experience compared to the original Elden Ring. This vision also underpins the game's three-day structure, designed to minimize downtime. The aim is a highly varied, action-packed RPG experience.
Nightreign is slated for a 2025 release, as revealed at TGA 2024, though a precise release date remains unannounced.
