Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: Addressing a Turbulent Launch

MSFS 2024 Apologizes and Acknowledges Turbulent Launch, Cites Unexpected Excitement

The launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 faced significant challenges, prompting an official response from the development team. Let's examine the reasons behind the initial difficulties.

Unexpected Demand Overwhelms Servers

Jorg Neumann, head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Sebastian Wloch, CEO of Asobo Studio, addressed player concerns in a YouTube video. They acknowledged the high level of anticipation but admitted to underestimating the sheer number of players attempting to access the game simultaneously. This unexpectedly large influx of users overwhelmed the game's server infrastructure.

Wloch explained the technical issues: the game's initial data requests from servers overloaded the database cache, even though it had been stress-tested with 200,000 simulated users.

Login Queues and Missing Content

Attempts to mitigate the problem by increasing server capacity and queue size proved temporary. The cache repeatedly collapsed under the strain, leading to extremely long loading times and instances where the game stalled at 97% completion. The missing aircraft and other content reported by players stemmed from this server overload and incomplete data retrieval.

Negative Steam Feedback

The significant launch issues resulted in overwhelmingly negative Steam reviews, citing long login queues and missing in-game assets as major concerns.

Addressing the Issues and Moving Forward

The development team has been actively working to resolve these problems. A statement on the game's Steam page indicates that the issues have been addressed, and player access is now being managed at a more sustainable rate. A sincere apology was issued, and the team committed to keeping players updated through various communication channels.
